What Should an Enterprise Ontology Pilot Deliver?
Understand ontology pilot deliverables, client inputs, boundaries and production handover considerations.
A scoped business problem
An ontology pilot should identify a workflow owner, decisions to support, source boundaries and representative competency questions. Establish the business vocabulary with subject-matter reviewers rather than modelling the entire organisation at once.
A model you can inspect
Agree the classes, relationships, identifiers and constraints needed for the scoped questions. Include source mappings, modelling assumptions and unresolved definitions. Select standards and formats based on the use case and integration needs.
Working evidence and a handover
Request representative data, validation findings, example queries or retrieval paths and documentation that another engineer can follow. Distinguish source facts, inferred relationships and generated language. Record where human review remains necessary.
A realistic next step
A prototype does not establish production security, scale or service levels. The final recommendation should address access control, integration, deployment, ownership, release management and maintenance before expansion.
